  Pro Guide to Making Eyes

CARGO president Hana Zalzal joined forces with Courteney Cox to create an eye palette with a very special meaning. All profits from the new CARGO Eye Shadow Palette - Coco, $28, a chic set of muted and metallic tones, will be donated to the EB Medical Research Foundation, which spreads awareness and raises funds for a rare skin disease called Epidermolysis Bullosa. "The EB Foundation is so important to me because it touched the life of a personal friend's child," says Cox. "And the fact that it is a rare disease makes awareness limited, so it does not get the funding that it deserves and needs. I hope this palette inspires people to get involved."

A rare genetic disorder, Epidermolysis Bullosa is a group of diseases characterized by blister formation after minor trauma to the skin. But unlike burns, these wounds do not heal, and these children cannot engage in normal child's play—riding bikes, sports, tag—because the contact will cause chronic sores. Wounds may cover up to 75 percent of the child's body, and scarring can cause the fingers and toes to fuse, leaving debilitating deformities. But EB is not only external—it affects its victims internally, too. Many EB kids can only eat liquids and soft foods because blistering and scarring occur in the mouth and esophagus.

When the son of Cox's friend Andrea Pett-Joseph was diagnosed with EB, Pett-Joseph took action, joining the EB Foundation (of which she is now Executive Vice President). "My instincts as a mother told me I had to do everything in my power to protect him from further harm, both physical and emotional, even though I felt helpless at the time," says Pett. "While I couldn't control or change what happened to Brandon, I could be a loud voice for him and other children suffering from this devastating disease."

Cox, who's become a champion of the EB Foundation, teamed up with CARGO, a champion of goodwill themselves (they created holiday greeting cards and gift tags last year to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital), was the perfect partner. "I had designed a lipstick color for CARGO a few years ago—called Cece—and they were so wonderful to work with," says Cox. "I think it is a fantastic makeup line and they are so generous to be giving 100 percent of the proceeds to the EB Foundation."

This chic, clear compact, designed by Cox and named after her daughter Coco, features five strikingly rich eyeshadow shades all personally chosen by Cox herself. "I picked these colors because each individual color is beautiful and they all work great together," she says. "Black, to me, is an essential shade for lining ... but to soften it you could mix it with any of the other colors. You can get a daytime or nighttime look out of the palette." The eclectic, cool shades of muted pink, slate blue, gold, soft black, and maroon are ultra-soft, blendable, and amazingly flattering.
