Is it supposed to be a translucent brown colour?

Yes it is. When I purchased my first bottle a year ago I thought I had received a faulty batch because the serum was a translucent brown even though the description and photos showed it as purple. Since then I� ve bought three more bottles and they� ve all been the same color. Despite that I love this serum.
