Agreed, they should have used hemp.

However, even though polyester is made from petroleum, from a sanitary and chemical standpoint it is still a “clean” material. It is antibacterial and doesn’t hold the moisture it absorbs so it’s resistant to mold, it’s hypoallergenic, and much easier to clean and sanitize. Whereas a “clean” material, let’s just say pure cotton, has no antibacterial properties, not hypoallergenic, absorbs and holds in moisture so it’s prone to molding. In order for manufacturers to get around this, the spray the “clean” material with zinc and/or silver nanoparticles, which are not clean and have been proven to causing new health risks and environmental pollutions. 
Because of that, I think a lot of companies still go to polyester because it still squeaks by the “clean” factor for their reason of use and it’s cheaper for them to manufacture than the hemp.
