This does not contain protein (unless there is naturally occurring protein in the herbs/spice blend that I do not know of). This is not a protein treatment, but a rich/nourishing hair moisture and naturally therapeutic scalp prewash treatment. To use this on low porosity hair (or high for that matter--my hair is high porosity), I would part my hair into sections and spritz my hair with water before application. I would then put on a processing cap and use heat to ensure the ingredients penetrate the hair shaft. Rinse out, wash, condition, and style as usual. Some scent may linger after, but eventually goes away. I love this product!
