The sample I got was a clear solution. I then ordered the full size, and it's yellow. Is this normal?

I noticed the same thing! I emailed Drunk Elephant and here's what they said: It is completely normal to see some variations in color from batch to batch for A-Gloei, A-Passioni, and A-Shaba (and that goes for all our products!).

Retinol naturally has a vibrant golden color in its raw state. Most ingredients naturally have some degree of pigment in them (and some, like retinol, are more pigmented than others). When you look at ingredients as raw materials such as green tea (or any tea extract, actually), grape, ferulic acid, and licorice, you will see that most have a warmish hue.

This color is so vibrant that even small amounts (0.10% and higher) will be visible. In a formula at 1%, retinol will naturally be a bright gold color (unless you take steps to bleach or alter the color in some way, which Drunk Elephant would never do)."
