It is usable without the case! It's just taky looking without it. Since you did not know it was the  refill  bottle  just return it to the store  and exchange it with the original product (it comes with the case and the replaceable formula bottle. Unfortunately  the refill bottle and the case and bottle are only a  5 difference  -
