Learn to protect yourself from gift card scams
Scammers may contact you by phone, text, email, or social media and ask you to buy a gift card. Never share your gift card number or PIN with someone you don’t know and trust.

Watch for these warning signs:
Urgency and pressure to act quickly.
Specifying which gift card to buy.
Asking for the gift card number or PIN.
Be cautious if someone:
Claims to be from the government and demands payment by gift card.
Pretends to be your boss asking for gift cards for a business event, often using a spoofed email.
Claims a friend or family member is in an emergency.
Pretends to be tech support and asks for gift cards to fix a computer problem.
Says you won a prize but need to pay with a gift card to receive it.
Pretends to be your utility company and demands payment by gift card.
Asks for money after meeting you online.
Sends you a check for too much money and asks you to return the difference using a gift card.
